Analytical corrections for double-cantilever beam tests

Abstract Double-cantilever beams (DCBs) are widely used to study mode-I fracture behavior and measure toughness under quasi-static loads. Recently, the authors have developed analytical solutions for DCBs dynamic loads with consideration of structural vibration wave propagation. There two methods beam-theory-based data reduction determine energy release rate: (i) using an effective built-in boundary condition at crack tip, (ii) employing elastic foundation model uncracked interface DCB. In this letter, corrections a crack-tip rotation presented, afforded by combining both these data-reduction authors’ recent each. Convenient easy-to-use DCB tests obtained, which avoid complexity difficulty approach, need multiple experimental measurements compliance length. The are, best knowledge, completely new. Verification cases based on numerical simulation presented demonstrate utility corrections.
